England T20I squad for the home series against Sri Lanka
England announced 16 member T20I squad for the three-match T20I series at home against Sri Lanak. The England T20I squad included all-rounder Chris Woakes and left-arm pacer David Willey along with Liam Dawson.
Woakes, who has been a regular member of the ODI unit, last played for England in a T20I over 5 years ago. His last T20 International appearance was in November 2015 against Pakistan. Meanwhile David Willey played his last T20 International in May 2019 and spinner Liam Dawson played his last T20I in 2018.
Ben Stokes, Jofra Archer and Reece Topley weren’t considered for selection as they are recovering from finger, elbow and side strain injuries respectively.
Joe Root didn’t make the cut for the shortest format once again. The last time Root featured in a T20 International was in May 2019 when England took on Pakistan at Cardiff. England won the match with Joe Root scoring 47 runs.
England coach Chris Silverwood opined this England T20I squad will be a good opportunity to better their team keeping the T20 World Cup in view.
“With the T20 World Cup only a few months away, this summer is about perfecting our team and continue to progress on the field. We want to approach every series with an influx of players aiming to win every match and giving us the best preparation as we get closer to the tournament,” England Men’s Head Coach, Chris Silverwood, said.
“With several high-profile players missing through injury, it allows me to look at some of our experienced players who have not featured at this level for some time. The likes of Chris Woakes and David Willey are very experienced cricketers, and to have them both in the mix is exciting and shows the depth of squad we have available. I want our team to play an attacking form of the game. I hope we can continue to excite the England fans with our approach,” he added.
The pace battery of England has the likes of Curran brothers, Chris Jordan, David Willey, Chris Woakes and Mark Wood while the spin department is enriched by the presence of Moeen Ali, Adil Rashid and Liam Dawson.
England T20I squad features the batting prowess of Jason Roy and Jos Buttler at the top along with Jonny Bairstow. Captain Eoin Morgan will steer the middle order alongside Dawid Malan followed by all-round options like Moeen Ali, Liam Livingstone etc.
