MS Dhoni fined for slow over rate

CSK lost to DC in their opening league match at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Saturday and they also faced a minor hiccup with captain MS Dhoni fined for slow over rate.

Chennai Super Kings became the first team to be subject to the new slow over rate penalty rules as captain MS Dhoni was fined 12 lakh INR for his first offence.

The three time champions failed to complete their quote of overs in the allotted time of 90 minutes as they were defending a score of 189 with dew set in the 2nd innings.

“As it was his team’s first offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Mr Dhoni was fined Rs 12 lakh.” a statement from the IPL read.

With this fine, MS Dhoni became the first captain subject to the new slow over penalty rules by the IPL governing body. The organizers observed a few matches were going over the stipulated time in the past few seasons and came up with strict regulations when it came to over-rates.

As per the new rules the over rate per hour is 14.1 overs. A captain may face a match ban after the third slow over rate offence.

The CSK bowlers were under the pump as Delhi Capitals openers pounced on them at any given opportunity. Only Dwayne Bravo conceded less than 7 runs per over.

CSK also had to combat the dew conditions in the second half and captain MS Dhoni admitted a team needs over 200 runs on a pitch like Wankhede batting first if the dew comes in to play.

Here are the new slow over rate penalty rules as per the new IPL norms:

First Offence:

12 lakh INR fine for the captain

Second Offence:

24 lakh INR fine for the captain

Or

6 lakh INR or 25% match fee fine (which ever is lesser) for each member of the team excluding captain.

Third and Each Subsequent Offence:

30 lakh INR fine and one-match ban for the captain

Or

12 lakh INR or 50% match fee fine (which ever is lesser) for each member of the team excluding the captain.
