5 batsmen who were run out on 99 in ODI cricket

Nervous 90s is a accepted psychological barrier in International cricket with many cricketers falling prey in the zone even after a substantially brilliant form through out the innings. What is even worse is falling just one short of a well-deserved century and to top it a getting out on 99 via a run out.

A total of 5 batsmen were run out on 99 in ODI cricket. Three of these knocks came in a winning knock while only one batsman was adjudged the Man of the Match. Here is the list:

Graeme Smith 99 v Sri Lanka (2002)

Proteas opener Graeme Smith was the first ever batsman to be run out on 99 in ODI cricket. He scored 99 runs in 106 balls with the help of 6 fours and 2 sixes before falling for a run out orchestrated by Mahela Jayawardene and Sanath Jayasuriya.

Smith top scored for his team in that match as South Africa scored 317-6 in 50 overs. The match was held in Centurion and the home team won the match by 177 runs with Jacques Kallis adjudged the Man of the Match for his 53 in 26 balls followed by 1/16 in 6 overs.

Sanath Jayasuriya 99 v England (2003)

In a VB series match at Adelaide, chasing a target of 280 runs set by England – Sanath Jayasuriya put on a masterful knock slamming 99 In 83 balls with the help of 9 fours and 2 fours. Sri Lanka was in absolute command of the chase until England captain Nasser Hussain affected a run out to send the talismanic batsman back to the hut. The collision with Kumar Sangakkara during the run didn’t help the Jayasuriya’s cause.

Sri Lanka lost the match by 19 runs as Andrew Caddick won the Man of the Match award for his 4/35 in 10 overs.

Adam Gilchrist 99 v Sri Lanka (2003)

Aussie wicket keeper batsman Adam Gilchrist became the second batsman to be run out on 99 at Centurion in a ICC World Cup Match in 2003. Chaminda Vaas affected the run out but not before Gilchrist wreaked havoc with a 88 ball 99 powered by 14 fours and 2 sixes.

Australia went on to score 319-5 in 50 overs and won the match by 96 runs. Captain Ponting was adjudged the Man of the Match for his 109 ball 114.

Eoin Morgan 99 v Scotland (2006)

These were Eoin Morgan’s Ireland cricket days in 2006 at Cambusdoon New Ground at Ayr. Walking in to bat at No.3, Morgan put on a 80 run partnership with Niall O’Brien to help Irelend from a situation of 19/2 in the match.

Morgan scored 99 runs in 134 balls with the help of 7 fours and 1 six before Colin Smith and Neil McCallum of Scotland affected the run out. Ireland scored 240/8 in 50 overs.

Eoin Morgan became the only cricketer ever to be adjudged the Man of the Match after being run out on 99. Ireland went on to win the match by 85 runs.

Sachin Tendulkar 99 v South Africa (2007)

This is the slowest 99 in the list. Sachin Tendulkar scored a patient 99 in 143 balls in tricky conditions at Belfast,  Ireland against a formidable all-pace attack of South Africa featuring Makhaya Ntini, Charl Langeveldt, Vernon Philander, Andre Nel, Andrew Hall and Jacques Kallis.

Sachin Tendulkar was run out via a Morne van Wyk throw to Mark Boucher when India were at 211-3 in 45.2 overs.

South Africa won the match by 4 wickets with 3 balls remaining – thanks to a unbeaten knock of 91 in 116 balls by Jacques Kallis who also picked 2 wickets in the match.
