Australia tour of South Africa postponed
Cricket Australia on Tuesday announced that the Australia’s scheduled tour of South Africa is postponed owing to a second wave of coronavirus in South Africa.
The three Test match series is a part of ICC World Test Championship race and is critical in Australia’s chances to qualify for the finals.
The Australian squad was slated to fly out for the three-match Test series later this month, but CA’s interim chief executive Nick Hockley reckons that the tour poses “unacceptable” risk.
“Due to the public health situation in South Africa, which includes a second wave and a new variant of the virus, and following extensive due diligence with medical experts, it has become clear that travelling from Australia to South Africa at this current time poses an unacceptable level of health and safety risk to our players, support staff and community,” Nick Hockley said in a statement.
In case Australia don’t get to play South Africa in the World Test Championship calendar – New Zealand will take the finals spot.
