List of Batsmen dismissed on 199 in Test Cricket
Angelo Mathews is the latest to join the exclusive club of batsmen who were dismissed on 199. Prior to his dismissal 11 cricketers faced the same fate. The first batsman being Pakistan’s Mudassar Nazar in 1984. The first captain to be dismissed on 199 was Steve Waugh. Only 4 times out of 11, these knocks ended in a winning cause.
Here is a complete look at the list of batsmen dismissed on 199:
1. Mudassar Nazar – 1984 v India
This match was played on a flat deck at Faisalabad. India put on 500 runs in the first innings as Sandip Patil and Ravi Shastri went on to score centuries in the middle order. Mudssar Nazar opened the innings for Pakistan and put on a 250 run stand with Qasim Umar for the 2nd wicket.
The scorecard read 391/1 when Mudassar Nazar needed just 1 run to get his double century. Hyderabad spinner Shivlal Yadav bowled a loopy off spinner as Nazar went for it but nicked the ball straight to the keeper’s hands. Nazar became the first ever batsman in Test history to be dismissed for 199.

The Pakistan batsman has a career highest of 231 which he scored against India in 1983.
2. Mohammad Azharuddin – 1986 v Sri Lanka
They say bank on your strengths, play your best shot but not on this day – as Mohammad Azharuddin was trapped lbw attempting his trademark flick shot, one short of his double century.
Playing in his 16th Test match, the 23 year old Indian batsman Mohammad Azharuddin put on a 163 run stand with Sunil Gavaskar (176) and 272 run stand with Kapil Dev (163) at Kanpur to help India score over 600 runs in the Test against Sri Lanka.
The score read 676/6 when Azhar needed 1 run for his double ton – but unfortunately he was trapped in front of wickets by fast bowling all rounder Ravindran Ratnayeke. Azharuddin became the first Indian batsman to be dismissed on 199 in Test history.

Apparently this was Azhar’s highest score in his International career.
3. Matthew Elliott – 1997 v England
Ashes Test at Leeds. England were bowled out for 172 in the first innings after a demolition job by Jason Gillespie who recorded his career best bowling figures of 7/37.
Australian top order was rocked by English pacers Darren Gough and Dean Headley as captain Mark Taylor, Greg Blewett, Mark Waugh and Steve Waugh perished for single digit scores putting Australia at 50/4. Opener Matthew Elliott showed true grit and joined forces with Ricky Ponting to put on a 268 run stand for the 5th wicket.
The score read 7 wickets for quadruple nelson when Elliott built a unlikely partnership of 61 runs with Paul Reiffel (no disrespect- Reiffel averaged 26.52 with bat in Tests) – needing just 1 run for his 200, pacer Darren Gough bowled a beaut of a out-swinging yorker which uprooted the off stump as the Aussie opener failed the connect the ball attempting to flick it on his pads.

Matthew Elliot’s 199 was the first time ever in Test history that a batsman dismissed on 199 ended in a result. Australia crushed England by an innings and 61 runs. This was also the first time a batsman was dismissed on 199 in an Ashes Test.
4. Sanath Jayasuriya – 1997 v India
Responding to Indian 1st innings score of 375 powered through centuries by Sachin Tendulkar (139) and Sourav Ganguly (149) which helped India take a lead of 43, Sanath Jayasuriya unleashed onslaught as he smashed 199 at a strike rate of 88.05.
The Sri Lankan opener put on a partnership of 218 runs with Aravinda de Silva (120) for the 3rd wicket as he continued bludgeoning the Indian bowlers. Abey Kuruvilla was the bowler who put an end to Indian misery as Jayasuriya tried to play his inswinger across the line in an attempt to clear the field ending up bowled.

This destructive knock by Sanath Jayasuriya came in the same series in which he recorded his career highest score of 340 against India.
5. Steve Waugh – 1999 v West Indies
The famous Bridgetown Test known for Brian Lara’s heroics which helped West Indies to a 1 wicket victory was the stage for the second Australian batsman to be dismissed on 199.
Captain Steve Waugh walked in to bat with his team in trouble at 36/3 in the first innings. He put on a 108 run stand with Justin Langer (51) for the 4th wicket before blowing away West Indies attack with a 281 run stand for the 5th wicket with Ricky Ponting (104).
Batting on 199, Steve Waugh faced a sharp turning off spinner from Nehemiah Perry which hit the pads – a loud appeal and the umpire raised his finger.

Steve Waugh’s knock was the first ever time a captain was dismissed on 199 in Test history. This was also the first time a score of 199 came in a losing cause.
6. Younis Khan – 2006 v India
You might remember this match as the Lahore Test in which Virender Sehwag and Rahul Dravid put on a 410 run opening partnership. Pakistan recorded as many as 4 centuries in their innings scoring 679/7 in the first innings.
Younis Khan was on 199 when he played Anil Kumble’s delivery straight to the mid on fielder and called for a quick single. In an attempt to follow the ball Anil Kumble blocked Shahid Afridi’s view and the non striker was no way possible for attempting a single. This left Younis Khan run back from the middle of the pitch – but for the direct hit towards wicket keeper’s end by the mid-on fielder Harbhajan Singh that led to the fall of Younis Khan. Clearly gutted Younis Khan walked back for what would have been a well deserved double ton.

7. Ian Bell – 2008 v South Africa
Ian Bell’s 199 was a fabulous treat to the cricketing fans as it oozed with class and greatness.
Bell walked in to the bat at the fall of Alastair Cook (60) which put England at 117/3 in 1st innings. He put on a colossal partnership of 286 runs with Kevin Pietersen (152) for the 4th wicket which pushed England towards a 500+ score.
Ian Bell’s knock was an absolute master class with an odd reverse sweep. Left arm spinner Paul Harris ended his innings when Bell stepped up to clear Harris’ delivery ending up giving a sharp return catch to the bowler.

This was the first time a batsman was dismissed on 199 at Lord’s in Test history.
8. Steve Smith – 2015 v West Indies
A 26 year old Steve Smith played an exceptional knock at Kingston against West Indies where none of his team mates could manage a half century in the 1st innings. West Indies pacer Jerome Taylor ran through the Aussie batting line up recording his career best of 6/47.
Steve Smith powered through his innings as he lost his batting partners at regular intervals. Australia managed 399 runs of which 199 runs were scored by the rising talent in Test cricket.
At 199 – Smith faced an in-swinging yorker from Jerome Taylor which went on to hit the pads – a loud appeal and the umpire raised his finger. Steve Smith asked for a review. Hawk-eye showed it was hitting the leg stumped. A thoroughly gutted Steve Smith left the field becoming the third Australian cricketer to be dismissed on 199.

Steve Smith returned in the 2nd innings to score a unbeaten 54. Australia won the Test by 277 runs but Josh Hazlewood was adjudged the Man of the Match for his 5 wicket haul in the 1st innings.
9. KL Rahul – 2016 v England
This Test match is known for Karun Nair’s exceptional knock of 303* against England.
KL Rahul walked in to bat as an opener for Team India after England put on a score of 477 runs in their 1st innings powered by Moeen Ali’s (146) century batting at No.4. KL Rahul commanded the bowling attack at will putting on a 152 run opening stand with Parthiv Patel (71)
The Karnataka batsman joined his state mate Karun Nair and put a 161 run stand for the 4th wicket – displaying a variety of stroke play, every one in the stands felt he was in for a well deserved double century. At 372/3, leg spinner Adil Rashid lured the Indian batsman to cut past the man at point – but to Rahul’s dismay the ball went straight to the point fielder Jos Buttler.

This was the first time an Asian batsman dismissed on 199 ended in a winning cause.
10. Dean Elgar – 2017 v Bangladesh
This Test match was played at Potchefstroom. South African top 3 batsmen relished the opportunity as Dean Elgar (199), Aiden Markram (91) and Hashim Amla (137) made the best of the opportunity after Bangladesh put them to bat.
Dean Elgar scored his maiden 150 in this Test and looked set to get to his first ever double century. The scorecard read 445/2 when Elgar mistimed a pull shot of Mustafizur Rahamn’s delivery which edged in the air to be taken by the safe hands of Mominul Haque at short mid-wicket.

Elgar became the first ever South African batsman to be dismissed on 199 – also the 10th batsman overall to achieve this feat.
11. Faf du Plessis – 2020 v Sri lanka
The latest in the list is Faf du Plessis. Displaying an array of stroke play against Sri Lankan attack – Faf sure looked like he was on his way to his maiden double century.
In an attempt to clear the mid on fielder, Faf du Plessis went against the turn of leg spinner Hasaranga – only to deliver the ball straight in to the hands of Sri Lankan captain Dimuth Karunaratne. It was a long walk for Faf through the empty stands at Centurion.

Faf du Plessis became the 4th batsman to be dismissed on 199 – ending on the winning side. He is the 11th batsman overall to be out on this score.
12. Angelo Mathews – 2022 v Bangladesh
Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews became the 12th batsman to be dismissed on 199. Sri Lanka were 9 down for 390 when Viswa Fernando walked in to bat with Mathews. He picked 2 runs to reach 199* on the penultimate delivery of the over by Nayeem. The Test match took place at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Chattogram.
Mathews shimmied down the wicket to slog the delivery away and gets no where near it and ended up playing it straight in to the hands of the fielder at square leg – Shakib Al Hasan.

Angelo Mathews is the first Sri Lankan batsman in 21st Century to be dismissed on 199. Previously Sanath Jayasuriya faced similar fate against India in 1997.
