New Rules in Big Bash League

Power Surge, X-factor Player and Bash Boost are the 3 new rules/innovations added to the upcoming edition of Big Bash League starting from December 10, 2020. The rules aim at generating interest in crowds through out the game period. Let’s have a look at each one of them.

  • Power Surge:
Power Surge is basically splitting Powerplay in to 2 segments. The 1st powerplay is mandatory for the first 4 overs of each innings, while the 2nd powerplay of 2 overs can be taken by the batting side from the 11th over of the innings.

  • X-factor Player:
It is basically a revamp of previously used Super Sub rule in International Cricket for a brief period. X-factor Player is named as the 12th or 13th man in the team list before play. The X-factor player can replace a batsman who has not yet batted or a bowler who has not bowled more than 1 over at the 10th over of 1st innings.

  • Bash Boost:
Bash Boost is a bonus point concept. Bonus point is rewarded at the half way stage of 2nd innings to one of the either teams. The criteria is set for both chasing team and fielding team. The chasing team wins a bonus point if they score more than the equivalent score of their opponent team at 10 over mark – In case the chasing team is below the equivalent score at 10 over mark, the fielding team gets the bonus point. 1 point is awarded as Bash Boost – a win gets the team 3 points. So there will be a total of 4 points for grabs in each match.
