Salman Butt appointed as head coach of Singapore
Singapore Cricket Association appointed former Pakistan cricketer Salman Butt as the consulting head coach for the national team. He will don the role for the duration of 2022 season. Former Pakistan women’s team trainer Jamal Hussain is also appointed as the fielding and trainer of Singapore national team.
Over the next five months, Singapore, an affiliate country at ICC since 1974 will compete in three major tourneys to qualify for ICC marquee tournaments – ICC T20 World Cup qualifiers in Zimbabwe (July), Asia Cup qualifier in Sri Lanka (August) and ICC Men’s Challenge League A in Canada (for ODI World Cup qualification).
Butt who represented Pakistan in 33 Tests, 78 ODIs and 24 T20Is, recorded 1889, 2725 and 595 runs respectively. This will be his first major coaching stint after retiring from all forms of cricket in 2020. He served a five-year ban for his part in a spot-fixing scandal in England in 2010 – after which was reintegrated in to the Pakistan domestic circuit in January 2016.
He represented Lahore Qalandars in Pakistan Super League in 2019. He recorded scores of 28 & 21 in losing cause. He withdrew from the Quaid-e-Azam trophy the day before the tournament started in 2020, effectively concluding his playing career.
Singapore Cricket Association CEO Saad Janjua confirmed that Salman Butt will be staying in Singapore and will travel with the team as head coach under a consultant contract.
