JP Duminy appointed as consultant for T20 World Cup

Former Proteas cricketer JP Duminy has been named as Team South Africa’s consultant for the upcoming T20 World Cup. Duminy is South Africa’s top run getter in T20 International Cricket.

Cricket South Africa appointed 2 consultants in the form of JP Duminy and Justin Sammons. Sammons had been with the team for the tour of Sri Lanka and will be replacing former assistant coach Enoch Nkwe.

Duminy and Sammons are part of South African provincial cricket coaching set-up. JP was appointed the batting coach of Lions. This was the first ever coaching role for the 37-year-old. Meanwhile Sammons is the coach of North West Province.

“Justin previously worked with the Proteas during the first part of our current tour of Sri Lanka so he has already developed a good working relationship with the players,” CSA’s director of cricket Graeme Smith said. “JP is a perfect fit for T20 cricket. His record as a player speaks for itself and he will bring specific skills in all three disciplines of batting, bowling and fielding.”

“I have played against many of these cricketers, and played with them, and I have relationships with all the players and staff that are in the mix in the South African squad so I am trying to see how I can add value to them in a personal capacity.”

Duminy sees a key part of his role as being to make sure the players’ experience is the opposite of his own open-ended position. “Role clarification is, if I put my player’s hat on, what players want. They want to make sure that when they go out and face those pressure moments there is clarity,” he said. “We want to make sure we provide them with enough information for them to find the answers as well. This is an environment, it is not a dictatorship. It is a facilitation of learning. If we are in a position to ask the right questions, we can collectively find the right answers.”

JP Duminy has represented South Africa in 46 Tests, 199 ODIs and 81 T20 Internationals and scored over 9000 runs for his country. He has 10 centuries and 46 half centuries to his name in International Cricket. He also picked 132 wickets in World Cricket including a hat-trick in the 2015 Cricket World Cup.
