RR vs CSK – IPL 2022 Report: Royals win the battle for Top 2

RR vs CSK, Match 68 – IPL 2022 Report: Captain MS Dhoni chose to bat in CSK’s last match of the season and also announced he will participate in next year’s Indian Premier League.

Trent Boult removed Ruturaj Gaikwad in the first over but that didn’t stop the new batsman Moeen Ali from smacking. He hit a 19-ball half century and smashed the last over of the powerplay by Trent Boult for 26 runs – 6-4-4-4-4-4! CSK were 75/1 in the first 6 overs.

R Ashwin, Obed McCoy and Yuzvendra Chahal picked wickets of Conway, Narayan Jagadeesan and Ambati Rayudu respectively post powerplay. CSK were reduced to 95/4 in 10.2 overs. The run flow went down drastically with MS Dhoni and Moeen Ali just trying to take the team through overs without further damage. Dhoni and Moeen were dismissed in the penultimate and final over of the innings and CSK managed to score just 150 runs. Obed McCoy conceded just 4 runs in the last over of the CSK innings and removed Moeen Ali.

In the last 58 balls – CSK managed to score 56 runs for the loss of 3 wickets. Post powerplay, CSK scored just 75 runs in 14 overs for the loss of 5 wickets.

Chasing 151 to win, RR lost Jos Buttler early but Yashasvi Jaiswal continued his good run of form. He put on a 51-run stand with captain Sanju Samson but the scoring rate took a dip post powerplay and Samson succumbed to the pressure – losing his wicket to Santner. Devdutt Padikkal couldn’t get the runs flowing and was bowled out by Moeen Ali 3 overs later.

The required run rate was soaring but RR sent in Ravichandran Ashwin as a move to tackle the spinners. Ashwin hit boundaries to ease the pressure. Jaiswal got to his half-century in 39 balls but leg spinner Prashant Solanki picked his maiden IPL wicket in the form of the RR opener. Jaiswal scored 59 off 44 balls with 8 fours & 1 six. Solanki removed Shimron Hetmyer in his next over but Ashwin hit a six off the last ball to bring the equation to 32 runs to win in 3 overs.

Matheesh Pathirana was introduced to bowl his 2 overs in the death and the first of them went for 13 runs. Ashwin and Parag hit a boundary each in that over. Mukesh Choudhary bowled the next over and conceded 12 runs which included a six by R ASHWIN which closed in the equation.

Ashwin hit another boundary in the final over by Pathirana. With 1 run to win from 2 balls – the Sri Lankan pacer bowled a wide and RR secured a win to help themselves to No.2 on the points table moving forward to the playoffs. Ashwin remained unbeaten on 40 off 23 balls powered by a strike rate of 173.91 to win the Player of the Match award!

CSK finished the season with 8 points from 14 matches and will finish at 9th spot unless MI wins it big against DC tomorrow.
