MI vs DC – IPL 2022 Report: Mumbai Indians power RCB into playoffs!
MI vs DC, Match 69 – IPL 2022 Report: Mumbai Indians fulfilled their fans’ wish by clinching a win off their last league match in IPL 2022. Delhi Capitals were put in to bat and they were soon reduced to 31/3 in 5.4 overs. Jasprit Bumrah removed Mitchell Marsh and Prithvi Shaw while Daniel Sams got the important wicket of David Warner.
Sarfaraz Khan didn’t last long as he perished for 10 runs on the board with DC in trouble at 50/4. Captain Rishabh Pant and brute force of Rovman Powell inspired a fight back from Delhi. The duo put on a 75-run stand for the fifth wicket in 7.2 overs! Rovman smacked 4 sixes while Pant recorded 4 fours and 1 six during his stay at the crease. Pant fell to Ramandeep Singh who conceded 19 runs in the first 5 balls of his over.
Bumrah returned to bowl in the death and cleaned up Powell with a scorching yorker. Axar Patel hit 2 sixes in the end and helped his team to 159/7 in 20 overs.
Chasing 160 to win, Mumbai were off to a very slow start. Rohit Sharma found it difficult putting the bat on to ball as Khaleel Ahmed made him struggle at the crease. Khaleel just gave away a single and bowled a wide to produce figures of 2-0-2-0 in the powerplay.
Rohit succumbed to the scoring rate pressure and fell to Anrich Nortje – scoring just 2 runs off 13 balls. The Mumbai Indians captain didn’t record a single half-century the entire season for the first time in his IPL career. Ishan Kishan kept the run flow going with Dewald Brevis who walked in to bat at one down. The duo put on an important 51-run stand for the second wicket in 6.1 overs to up the ante.
Kuldeep Yadav went for 25 runs in his first 2 overs but captain Pant trusted him with a straight third over to deliver. Kuldeep obliged his captain’s wish and got rid of the dangerous Ishan Kishan for 48 runs. A delivery later, Brevis top edged going for a slog sweep off a tossed up delivery – it was sitter for captain Pant who ran in with his gloves to finish a simple catch but dropped it – much to the frustration of Kuldeep who made a brilliant come back.
Brevis was eventually bowled out by Shardul Thakur with MI needing 65 runs in 33 balls. The very next ball Tim David edged the ball behind stumps to Pant but the Delhi captain decided not to take the review. There was a clear spike and that would have indeed dented Mumbai chances big time!
The stage was set up for a Tim David finish. David made the best of the opportunity to smash 4 sixes and 2 fours during his 11-ball stay smacking 34 runs. Tilak Varma provided a good support on the other end and kept the slog going when required. The equation was just 15 runs to win in 13 balls at the exit of David and Ramandeep Singh scored a 6-ball 13 to help his team cross the line!
The win meant Delhi Capitals are out of the playoffs race and RCB clinched the berth!
