MI vs KKR – IPL 2022 Report: KKR’s Plan-A defies Bumrah’s bowling heroics

MI vs KKR, Match 56 – IPL 2022 Report: Kolkata Knight Riders prevailed victorious over Mumbai Indians who faced a huge blow in the form of Suryakumar Yadav – who was ruled out of IPL 2022 due to left forearm injury.

KKR restored their original opening combo plan. Venkatesh Iyer and Ajinkya Rahane opened the innings and put on a 60-run stand in 5.4 overs. Venkatesh Iyer brought back glimpses of previous IPL season by smacking 43 runs in 24 balls with the help of 3 fours and 4 sixes before falling to Kumar Kartikeya.

Nitish Rana walked in to bat one down and put a 27-run stand with Rahane. Rahane tried reverse sweeping Kumar Kartikeya and was bowled by the slow pace of the delivery. Nitish Rana continued his good run by smacking 4 sixes and 3 fours during his stay.

Captain Shreyas Iyer’s bad run with the bat continued when he was dismissed for just 6 runs – yet again to a leg spinner – this time it is Murugan Ashwin!

Jasprit Bumrah who had a less than average tournament so far was brought in to the attack by Rohit Sharma to combat the dangerous Andre Russell and he delivered it! KKR collapsed from 123-3 to 156-8 – thanks to a sensational comeback by Bumrah, who picked his maiden five wicket haul in IPL. The right arm pacer finished with bowling figures of 4-1-10-5. His best figures in T20 cricket. Bumrah picked the wickets of Sheldon Jackson, Pat Cummins and Sunil Narine in a span of 4 balls to bamboozle KKR who were 156-5 in 17 overs.

KKR ended with a score of 165/9 – thanks to Rinku Singh’s unbeaten 23* in the end who was witnessing the Bumrah carnage from the non-striker’s end.

Chasing 166 to win, Mumbai lost Rohit Sharma (2) in the first over by Tim Southee. Not many were convinced with the DRS showing a spike on Rohit’s bat as he was adjudged caught behind.

Andre Russell was introduced in the powerplay and he delivered by getting the wicket of Tilak Varma for 6 runs.  Few overs later Dre Russ got his second wicket in the form of Ramandeep Singh who built a steady partnership with Ishan Kishan. Tim David walked in a whacked 3 boundaries before falling to Varun Chakravarthy.

Wickets fell at regular intervals but Ishan Kishan kept his regained form going. Kishan registered his 12th IPL half-century but perished to a Pat Cummins’ bouncer which forced him to mis-hook straight in to the hands of Rinku Singh.

Pat Cummins removed Ishan Kishan, Daniel Sams and Muragn Ashwin in one over to spell doom to Mumbai innings. Kieron Pollard was MI’s last hope and he he couldn’t get the runs flowing either. Mumbai Indians collapsed from 83-3 to 113 all out in a span of 32 balls.

This is the first time since IPL 2014 that KKR beat MI twice in the same edition of Indian Premier League. KKR are still alive in the tournament and their fate rests in their hands and other teams.
