KKR vs GT: IPL 2022 Report: Gujarat spoil Dre Russ show!
KKR vs GT, Match 35 – IPL 2022 Report: Hardik Pandya became the first captain in IPL 2022 to elect to bat after winning the toss.
Captain Pandya led from the front after the early loss of Shubman Gill (7) to Tim Sothee on his return. Hardik registered his 7th IPL fifty in 36 balls – his third this season. Saha and Miller provided him the support early on and in middle overs respectively.
Kolkata came back well with Southee picking 2 wickets at the backend but it was Andre Russell who snapped 4 wickets in his final over and conceded just 5 runs as Gujarat scored 156/9 in 20 overs.
Chasing 157 runs to win, KKR brought in their new opening pair of Sam Billings and Sunil Narine. Mohammed Shami removed both the openers as KKR were reduced to 10/2 in 2.2 overs. 2 overs later Lockie Ferguson removed Nitish Rana. Captain Shreyas Iyer also had to depart with the score at 34/4.
Rinku Singh top scored for KKR but his exit at the score of 79 brought in the dangerous Andre Russell. Russell spanked 6 sixes in his knock as he bludgeoned the Gujarat pacers all round the park. It all came down to the final over with KKR needing 18 runs to win and Russell hit the first ball out of the park off Alzarri Joseph. Joseph bowled the next one short on to the body of Russell and a mis timed pull meant the exit of Dre Russ – thanks to a stunning catch near the boundary under pressure by Lockie Ferguson. Titans clinched the match by 8 runs and became the first team to win the toss and elect to bat and win a match!
