RR vs KKR – IPL 2022 Report: A smash hit high scorer sparks IPL birthday bash!

RR vs KKR – Match 30 – IPL 2022 Report: A century, a fifer, a hat-trick and over 410 runs on the 15th birthday of Indian Premier League. What a match! Exactly 15 years ago, today the first ever IPL match was played between RCB and KKR. Current KKR coach Brendon McCullum sizzled with a mind boggling 158* in 73 balls.

Earlier KKR captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and elect to put Rajasthan Royals to bat. Jos Buttler smacked his second century of IPL 2022 with the help of 9 fours and 5 sixes. Royals scored 217-5 in 20 overs – thanks to the slog in the end by Shimron Hetmyer yet again.

KKR’s chase started off disastrously as Aaron Finch called for a needless run off the first ball of the innings – Shimron Hetmyer collected the ball and hit it direct to send the newly instated opener Sunil Narine back to the pavilion without facing a delivery.

Captain Shreyas Iyer started off supremely scoring back-to-back boundaries while Aaron Finch struck form as well. Finch brought up his half-century in 25 balls but fell prey in the same over to Prasidh Krishna. Soon after Iyer reached his fifty in 32 balls and started to get the run flow going.

The biggest blow came in the form of Andre Russell getting bowled out by Ravichandran Ashwin for a golden duck.

KKR needed 40 runs to win with 6 wickets in hand. Chahal struck off the first ball of 16th over to send Venkatesh Iyer out. Of the last 3 delivered Chahal got the wickets of Shreyas Iyer (85), Shivam Mavi (0) and Pat Cummins (0) to record a hat-trick and his first fifer in IPL. He became the fifth Rajasthan Royals bowler to record a hat-trick. This was also the 21st hat-trick in IPL history.

Umesh Yadav sprung hope in KKR fans when he struck Boult for 2 sixes and a four. RR needed to defend 18 runs in the last 2 overs to be bowled by Prasidh Krishna and Obed McCoy. Prasidh Krishna conceded just 7 runs leaving KKR 11 runs to win in the last over. Obed McCoy (on his IPL debut) conceded 3 runs and picked 2 wickets to bowl out KKR for 210 to record a 7 run win!
