Most wins as overseas IPL captain: Only three overseas captains managed to lift the IPL trophy over the last 14 seasons. Here is the Top 10 list of overseas captains and their win record in Indian Premier League.
10. Shane Watson – 8 wins in 24 matches
Shane Watson has got full-time captaincy of Rajasthan Royals in 2014. He also led RCB in two matches in 2017 season. He could only secure 8 wins in his 24 attempts as captain.
9. Eoin Morgan – 12 wins in 24 matches
Eoin Morgan led all his 24 matches in IPL for Kolkata Knight Riders. He led his team to 12 wins including a tournament final in IPL 2021.
8. Kumar Sangakkara – 15 wins in 47 matches
Kumar Sangakkara led three teams in his IPL career – Kings XI Punjab, Deccan Chargers and Sunrisers Hyderabad. He didn’t have a great record as a skipper as he could manage just 15 wins in 47 matches.
7. Daniel Vettori – 15 wins in 28 matches
Daniel Vettori was named the captain of Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2011. He led the team in 28 matches and secured 15 wins before turning coach for the same franchise.
6. Kane Williamson – 16 wins in 33 matches
Kane Williamson began his career with Sunrisers Hyderabad and had led the team in to finals of the 2018 edition of Indian Premier League. He led SRH in 33 matches over 3 seasons and secured 16 wins.
5. George Bailey – 18 wins in 35 matches
George Bailey led Kings XI Punjab over two seasons. In 2014, the Aussie cricketer led Punjab to their maiden IPL final in his first season as a captain. He helped KXIP to 18 wins out of 35 matches.
4. Steve Smith – 25 wins in 42 matches
Steve Smith has led both Rajasthan Royals and Rising Pune Supergiant in IPL. He helped Pune to the final in 2017 where they lost narrowly to Mumbai Indians. Smith has a win percent of 59.52% in IPL as a captain.
3. Shane Warne – 31 wins in 56 matches
Shane Warne was the first ever overseas captain in IPL history to lift the title in the inaugural edition in 2008. The late Aussie cricketer led Rajasthan Royals over four seasons in 56 matches. The legendary cricketer will be known for his quirky tactics on the field and for introducing new Indian talent to the fore.
2. Adam Gilchrist – 35 wins in 76 matches
Adam Gilchrist has led a record 76 matches in IPL history. It is the most by any overseas IPL captain. He led Deccan Chargers and Kings XI Punjab. He helped Deccan Chargers to title win in 2009 after the franchise finished bottom of the table in 2008.
1. David Warner – 35 wins in 69 matches
David Warner succeeded Shane Warne and Adam Gilchrist as the overseas IPL captain to lift the trophy in 2016 (SRH). He led Sunrisers Hyderabad in 67 matches while he led Delhi Daredevils in 2 matches. He is now back with Delhi Capitals.
