India vs New Zealand Toss: India won the toss and elect to bat
Indian skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss for the 3rd consecutive time in the T20I series and elect to bat at Eden Gardens to test out the batting skills which were subject to questions while batting first. Ishan Kishan was roped in for KL Rahul while R Ashwin made way for Yuzvendra Chahal.
Tim Southee sat out for the 3rd T20I as Mitchell Santner took up the captaincy duties for New Zealand.
Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma provided a smashing start for India as they put on 69 runs in 6.2 overs. Captain Rohit scored a fabulous half century – his 30th 50+ score in T20Is. Kiwi skipper Mitchell Santner turned the tide by picking the wickets of Ishan Kishan (29) and Suryakumar Yadav (0) in the same over. A over later he removed Rishabh Pant as India faced similar issues with the middle order in the middle over phase.
Shreyas Iyer and Venkatesh Iyer steadied the ship but they too departed in a span of 2 balls with the score reducing to 140-6 in 16.1 overs. The lower order wagged for Team India as Harshal Patel (18) and Deepak Chahar (21* in 8 balls) helped India power to 184-7 in 20 overs.
Chasing 185 runs to win – New Zealand scored 21 runs in the first 2 overs. Enter Axar Patel – the left arm spinner removed Daryl Mitchell and Mark Chapman in the 3rd over of the match. A over later he got the wicket of Glenn Phillips as Kiwis were struggling at 30-3 in 4.4 overs.
Martin Guptill and Tim Seifert steadied the ship as the former brought up his half century in 33 balls before succumbing to Yuzvendra Chahal. Kiwi batting order collapsed again as the Indian bowlers kept picking wickets at regular wickets. Venkatesh Iyer who was asked to bowl for the first time in his International career got a his maiden wicket in the form of Adam Milne.
Kiwis bundled out for 111 runs in 17.2 overs as Team India whitewashed the visitors 3-0.
