Sunrisers Hyderabad has appointed Proteas cricketer Aiden Markram as their new captain for the upcoming edition of IPL. Markram has already led the franchise in SA20 and helped his team to a title win. The proteas stylish batter replaces Kane Williamson (now in Gujarat Titans) as the new Hyderabad skipper.

He made his IPL debut in 2021 as a replacement for Dawid Malan in Punjab Kings team. Sunrisers paid INR 2.6 crore INR to buy Markram at the 2022 auction.

He played 20 matches in IPL scoring 527 runs at a brilliant average of 40.54 powered by a strike rate of 134.10. He recorded 3 half centuries with a highest score of 68* to his name.

In the recently concluded SA20, Markram led the Sunrisers Eastern Cape team and recorded the 3rd highest runs in the tournament. He scored 366 runs at an average of 33.27 powered by a strike rate of 127.97. He scored 1 century and 1 half century with a high score of 100 which he recorded in the tourney semi-final.

It is understood that Bhuvneshwar, who has been with the franchise since its inaugural season in 2013, along with Mayank Agarwal (bought in the December auction) and Markram were among the contenders for the leadership position. Markram was chosen for the role by the Sunrisers team management, which is led by Brian Lara, who was appointed as head coach ahead of the auction.
