Highlights: Sir Vivian Richards 189* vs England – ODI

On May 29, 1984 – Sir Vivian Richards blasted the ultimate ODI knock of the time smacking the record for the new highest individual score in ODI cricket – 189* off 170 balls. The knock was one of the greatest rescue acts as West Indies were reduced to 162/9 after Neil Foster caught and bowled big bird Joel Garner for 3 runs. Viv was in his 90s at that stage of the game.

Michael Holding walked in at No.11 and he put on an unbeaten stand of 106* runs with Viv Richards for the 10th wicket to power West Indies to 272/9 in full quote of overs. Holding scored just 12* in the partnership with Viv.

This is the first ever 100-partnership in ODI cricket for the tenth wicket and only other pair to put on such a stand was Mohamad Amir and Saeed Ajmal – 103 runs vs New Zealand at Abu Dhabi in 2009.

Sir Vivian Richards rates his knock of 189* as his best ever knock and it remained a record ODI individual score until Saeed Anwar recorded 194 against India in 1997.
