IPL 2022 Final: Gujarat Titans clinch their maiden title on debut

IPL 2022 Final Match Report: Gujarat Titans clinched their maiden IPL title in the debut season. Captain Hardik Pandya all-round show was the highlight of the night.

Earlier Sanju Samson won a rare toss and opted to put Gujarat Titans to field in the finals of IPL 2022. Jos Buttler and Yashasvi Jaiswal had a brilliant start but Yash Dayal removed Jaiswal on 22 (16) after he hit 2 sixes already. Buttler and Samson put on a 29 run-stand but Captain Hardik Pandya removed Samson. Pandya picked 2 more crucial wickets of Jos Buttler (39) and Shimron Hetmyer to reduce RR to 98/6 in 15.5 overs.

Buttler ended the season with 863 runs. The second most runs in a single edition of IPL – behind Virat Kohli (973 runs).

R Sai Kishore was introduced late in to the attack but he removed R Ashwin and Trent Boult in his 2 over spell (2-0-20-2). Rajasthan Royals could manage just 130/9 in 20 overs.

Chasing 131 runs to clinch the trophy, Gujarat Titans lost 2 of their top order batters in the first 5 overs. Prasidh Krishna bowled out Saha for 5 whole Boult got Matthew Wade for 8 runs. Shubman Gill and Hardik Pandya put on a solid partnership of 63 runs in 8.5 overs to put the odds in favour of the Titans.

Yuzvendra Chahal bowling in his final over of the season removed Hardik Pandya who edged one to slips. It was wicket 27 for him and that secured him the purple cap for the season. No other spinner picked as many wickets as Chahal in a single edition of Indian Premier League.

New batsman in David Miller took charge and struck an unbeaten 32 off 19 balls with the help of 3 fours and 1 six. R Ashwin was introduced in the second part of the Titans innings and he went for runs. He conceded 32 runs in 3 overs – as the required run rate fell below 6.

Gill and Miller had a 47-run stand in just 4.5 overs to help Titans cross the line. Shubman Gill hit the winning six for Gujarat Titans. This was just the second occasion since a team clinched their maiden title in their debut season. The first team to do so was Rajasthan Royals in the inaugural season in 2008.
