GT vs MI – IPL 2022 Report: Mumbai choke Gujarat
GT vs MI, Match 51 – IPL 2022 Report: Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan produced the best powerplay for Mumbai Indians this tournament – 62 runs for no loss. Both the openers set the tempo with 40+ knocks and it seemed like another 200+ total at Brabourne Stadium – but not to be!
Rashid Khan spun his magic to removed Rohit Sharma and the dangerous Kieron Pollard who had no clue facing the leggie. Tim David saved the day for Mumbai Indians with last overs slog to power a 21-ball 44* studded with 2 fours and 4 sixes. He won the Super Striker of the Match award for his 209.52 effort. MI scored 177 runs in their full quota of overs. The last ball of the 20th over by Shami disappearing for a six by Tim David. David felt MI were 15-20 runs short in this wicket at half way stage.
Chasing 178 runs to win on a belter, Gujarat Titans openers produced the first hundred opening partnership for Titans. Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill smacked scintillating half-centuries to put on a 106-run stand in 12 overs. Leg spinner Murugan Ashwin produced the twist by removing both the Gujarat openers in his final over.
Hardik Pandya and Sai Sudharsan continued the smack fest. Sudharsan had to depart in an unfortunate case of hit wicket off the bowling of Kieron Pollard (138/3 in 16 overs).
Hardik Pandya continued his rich form by smacking 4 fours in his 14-ball stay before departing for a unnecessary run out. Titans needed 22 runs to win 14 balls at the fall of Hardik and it was Gujarat’s usual finishers David Miller and Rahul Tewatia to do the job for them.
Miller hit the last ball of Jasprit Bumrah’s forgettable spell (4-0-48-0) for a six, reducing the required runs to 9 runs off the final over. Daniel Sams bowled a brilliant final over to redeem his pride with the ball after the Pat Cummins nightmare.
Sams conceded 1, 0, 1 (run out) off the first 3 balls. Tewatia called for the second run and was dismissed run out at the wicket-keeper’s end. Rashid Khan took strike on the fourth delivery with Titans needing 7 runs in 3 balls.
Sams delivered an into the wicket slower delivery to Rashid, who mistimed a pull and almost ended up getting caught by the Australian off his own bowling running backward with stretched arms – the ball fell short by inches on to the fingertips. The equation now read as 6 runs to win in 2 balls with the set batsman David Miller taking strike.
Sams bowled a slower delivery around the tramline – Miller crouches to take a swing at it and misses. Final delivery to Miller: Sams delivered a low full toss outside off – Miller goes for a hoick and misses it. Mumbai Indians win the match by 5 runs! The crowd erupts as Mumbai Indians rob off a win from the arms of Gujarat Titans.
