MI vs PBKS – IPL 2022: No joy for Mumbai!

MI vs PBKS – Match 23 – IPL 2022 Report: Mumbai Indians lost their fifth consecutive match in IPL 2022 as Punjab Kings registered their third win of the tournament.

Punjab openers Mayank Agarwal and Shikhar Dhawan put on a 97-run stand in 9.3 overs to put MI on the back foot. Mumbai Indians picked wickets in the middle overs but Jitesh Sharma impressed once again with his knock of 30* runs at a strike rate of 200.00 which powered Kings to 198-5.

Chasing 199 to win – Rohit Sharma gave his team a flying start before falling to Kagiso Rabada. Ishan Kishan departed for the first time since 2019 in powerplay. Teen sensations Dewald Brevis and Tilak Varma took on themselves to resurrect the innings. Brevis hit four consecutive sixes to welcome Rahul Chahar in to the attack. Chahar conceded 29 runs in his first over (1, 4, 6, 6, 6, 6) but came back well to give away just 15 runs in his next three overs.

Odean Smith got rid of Dewald Brevis on the score of 49 – Brevis could have been the youngest batter to register a IPL half-century. Meaningless run outs of Tilak Varma and Kieron Pollard pushed Punjab on the backfoot but the ever-reliable Suryakumar Yadav put MI in the chase with some astonishing shots. His knock of 43 included just 1 four but 4 sixes in it.

Rabada got the wicket of Suryakumar Yadav to seal the deal for Punjab while Odean Smith who is coming after a six thumping by Rahul Tewatia, conceded six off the very first ball as MI needed 21 runs in the final over. He recovered well as he picked three wickets in the final over of the match as Punjab gifted Mumbai their fifth straight loss.
