MI vs CSK – IPL 2022 Report: MS Dhoni the finisher!

MI vs CSK – Match 33 – IPL 2022 Report: Mahendra Singh Dhoni showed the world once again why he is the best finisher ever. CSK clinched a last ball thrillers and scrapped the chances of play off qualification for Mumbai Indians.

Earlier Mukesh Choudhary rocked the Mumbai Indians top order by picking three wickets inside the powerplay. He removed MI openers Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan for ducks in the first over of the match. Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav were once again Mumbai’s rescue acts. Suryakumar scored a quick 31 at 152.38 before falling to Santner reducing MI to 47-4 in 7.3 overs.

Hrithik Shokeen, a 21-year-old debutant for Mumbai Indians playing his first ever T20 match ever impressed with a run a ball 25. He provided support to Tilak Varma who smacked his second IPL half-century. Jaydev Unadkat smacked 19 runs in 9 balls to power Mumbai to a respectable total of 155/7 in 20 overs.

Chasing 156 runs to win, CSK lost Ruturaj Gaikwad off the first ball of the innings bowled by Daniel Sams. Santner departed shortly after scoring 11 runs in 9 balls. Sams was exceptional on the night as he redeemed his Pat Cummins carnage by picking 4 wickets against CSK. Important wickets of Gaikwad, Santner, Rayudu and Shivam Dube.

Rayudu top scored for CSK and put them in the hunt. It all came down to MS Dhoni and Dwaine Pretorius with Chennai needing 42 runs to win in 18 balls. Pretorius began the onslaught with a six off Jaydev Unadkat. With 2 overs remaining CSK needed 28 runs to win – Bumrah conceded 11 in the penultimate over leaving Unadkat to defend 17 runs in the final over.

Jaydev Unadkat started the over with a wicket of Dwaine Pretorius who was trapped LBW. DJ Bravo walked in and took a single the first ball he faced to put Dhoni on stike. CSK now needed 16 runs in the last 4 balls of the match. The left arm pacer put one in the slot to Dhoni which was hit straight into the sightscreen for a six! The equation now read 10 runs to win in 3 balls. Dhoni followed his six with a boundry with a pull shot placing the ball to a Four through the gap. Rohit Sharma looked absolutely distraught.

Needing 6 runs off the last 2 balls to win, MS Dhoni picked 2 runs after smacking one to deep mid-wicket. It all came down to one final ball with CSK needing 4 runs to win off the final ball. A low full toss with fine leg up and Dhoni was quick to shuffle and tonk the ball on his legs to put the ball to the boundary as the CSK fans erupted in the stadium. Dhoni raised his bat in a nonchalant manner just to remind us who the best finisher in the world is once again!
