Jason Roy pulls out of IPL 2022

England opener Jason Roy has pulled out of IPL 2022 citing the challenge of prolonged stay in the bio secure bubble. Roy was signed by Gujarat Titans for a base price of 2 crore INR, which was hailed as one of the value buys at the IPL 2022 Mega Auction.

Roy was last seen playing in Pakistan Super League for Quetta Gladiators where he scored 303 runs in 6 innings at an average of 50.50 powered by a strike rate of 170.22.

The 31-year-old batsman has represented 3 franchises in IPL so far – He made his IPL debut with Gujarat Lions followed by subsequent stints with Delhi Daredevils and Sunrisers Hyderabad. Jason Roy featured in 13 IPL matches, scoring 329 runs at an average of 29.90 powered by a strike rate of 129.01. He scored 2 half-centuries – one each for Delhi Daredevils and Sunrisers Hyderabad with a best of 91* while representing the Delhi franchise. Both the half centuries came in his respective team debuts.

This is now the second time that Roy has opted out of IPL after being sold at the auction. Previously he chose to stay away from the tournament after being picked by Delhi Capitals at a base price of 1.5 crore in the IPL 2020 edition.  

IPL 2022 will be a 10-team event and is scheduled to take place in Mumbai and Pune. The tourney is set to begin on March 26 with the finals scheduled to take place on April 29.

Gujarat Titans are placed along side Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Punjab Kings in Group B. Titans are yet to name a replacement for Jason Roy.

A total of 74 matches including the playoffs will be featured in the upcoming edition of IPL.

All sides will play four matches each at Wankhede Stadium and DY Patil Stadium. Each team will feature in 3 matches apiece at Brabourne Stadium and MCA International Stadium (Pune).
