Chennai Super Kings clinched the first match of IPL 2021- Phase 2 at Dubai and shot themselves up to top of the points table with 12 points in 8 matches edging Delhi Capitals on better net run rate on the points table.

Chennai Super Kings won the toss and elect to bat first. Mumbai Indians were missing the likes of Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya due to injury concerns and Kieron Pollard took on the task of leading the defending champions. Anmolpreet Singh and Saurabh Tiwary walked in as replacements.

The exit of Faf du Plessis (0), Moeen Ali (0), Rayudu (0 retired hurt), Suresh Raina (4) and  MS Dhoni (3) meant the onus was on Ruturaj Gaikwad and Jadeja to steer the ship. Gaikwad and Jadeja put on a partnership of 81 runs in 10.4 overs to help CSK cross the hundred mark.

Gaikwad exploded in the end overs to score a unbeaten 88 in 58 balls with the help of 9 fours and 4 sixes. CSK reached 156-6 in 20 overs

Dwayne Bravo – 23 runs & 3 wickets

The exit of Jadeja with 3.2 overs remaining meant CSK needed a batsman who can slog. Bravo powered to 23 in 8 balls with the help of 3 sixes which pushed Mumbai Indians on the back foot.

Bravo who didn’t bowl a single over in his last 4 T20 matches in the Caribbean, came in to bowl in the 10th over of Mumbai innings and removed Ishan Kishan off just the second delivery he bowled. He got the wickets of Rahul Chahar and Jasprit Bumrah in the 20th over to return bowling figures of 4-0-25-3 which help CSK win the match by 20 runs.

Deepak Chahar – 2 wickets

The right arm swing bowler struck twice in the power play to remove Quinton de Kock (17) and Anmolpreet Singh (16) – reducing Mumbai to 35-2 in 5 overs.

Deepak Chahar conceded just 19 runs in his 4 overs spell which put CSK on the front foot.

Adam Milne – 2 wickets

Mumbai Indians’ kiwi pacers Trent Boult and Adam Milne reduced CSK to 24-4 in 6 overs. Boult was expensive in the death overs but Milne finished with bowling figures of 4-0-21-2.

Milne got the price wickets of Moeen Ali and MS Dhoni.

Saurabh Tiwary – 50 runs

Tiwary walked in to bat after the fall of Suryakumar Yadav (3) at 37-3 in 5.4 overs. The left-handed batsman scored a unbeaten half century in 40 balls with the help of 5 fours.

Tiwary was the only hope for Mumbai Indians as batsmen like Ishan Kishan (11), Kieron Pollard (15), Krunal Pandya (4) fell around him. He put on a fight to take the match to the last 2 overs but CSK were up to the task to finish the proceedings clinically!
