CSK v DC Match Report: Delhi Capitals win on Pant’s captaincy debut

Delhi Capitals won the toss and chose to bowl. Tom Curran and Chris Woakes debuted for DC in this match. Anrich Nortje and Kagiso Rabada weren’t available for the match because of their seven-day mandatory quarantine as they landed in Mumbai on 6th April. Steve Smith wasn’t picked for DC’s side. Likewise, Cheteshwar Pujara wasn’t picked for CSK’s side either. Faf du Plessis and Ruturaj Gaikwad came into open for CSK.

In the very second over of the match, Avesh Khan provided CSK their first wicket with a good length ball hitting straight in to the pads of Faf Du Plessis. Gone for 0 off 3, CSK were now at 7/1.

The first ball of the 3rd over, Ruturaj Gaikwad edged the ball in to the hands of Shikhar Dhawan behind wickets after he nicked the ball which landed outside off by Chris Woakes. Ruturaj Gaikwad departed for 5 off 8, CSK at 7/2 in 2.1 overs.

In the 8th over, Moeen Ali used impressive footwork to smash Ashwin for 2 consecutive sixes. It was in the 3rd ball of the over when he played a reverse sweep but unfortunately didn’t get the designed distance and the ball landed in to the safe hands of Shikhar Dhawan. Suresh Raina and Moeen were batting efficiently until Moeen got dismissed. Gone for 36 off 24 including 4 fours and 2 sixes. CSK were 60/3 at this point. Ambati Rayudu walked in.

Despite losing 3 wickets soon, Raina and Rayudu kept scoring runs at a good pace and built a partnership of 50 runs off just 25 balls by the 13th over. On the very last ball of the over Suresh Raina completed his first half-century of IPL 2021 by hitting a maximum at 44 runs. It took him just 32 balls to complete the achievement. CSK were 118/3 at this point.

On the last ball of the 14th over Ambati Rayadu hit Tom Curran’s ball too high in the sky but it didn’t reach too far and landed in to Shikhar Dhawan’s hands yet again, his 3rd catch of the match. Gone for 23 off 16 including 1 four and 2 sixes. The significant partnership of Raina and Rayadu Was Broken Here. CSK were 123/4 at this point. Ravindra Jadeja walked in.

The first ball of the 16th over, Raina ran for a run as soon as he hit Avesh Khan’s ball and he intended to come back for a second while Jadeja bumped into Avesh. Unfortunately, Raina couldn’t come back to his crease in time and got run out by Chris Woakes after giving up halfway. Gone for 56 off 36 including 3 fours and 4 sixes. CSK 137/5 at this point. MS Dhoni walked in.

In the 16th over again, Avesh Khan got Dhoni bowled for a duck as the skipper walked back disappointed. Gone for 0 off 2. CSK were 137/6 at this point. Sam Curran walked in.

The 19th over was important and game-changing for CSK as Curran and Jadeja joined together to smash Tom Curran for 22 runs in the over with one more additional run due to a wide ball.

The 20th over bowled by Chris Woakes was a decent over for CSK as they scored 10 runs of it. Although Curran got out on the last ball, Jadeja and the English all-rounder reached the 50 run partnership in the over which came off just 26 balls. Sam Curran scored 34 off 15 including 4 fours and 2 sixes while Jadeja scored 26 off 17 including 3 fours. CSK ended their innings at 188-7 in 20 overs.

Chasing 189 to win, Delhi Capitals openers Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan helped the team complete 50 runs within just 5 overs without losing a single wicket. Dhawan scored 27 runs from 15 balls and Shaw scored 23 runs from 13 balls to contribute to the 50 run partnership.

There was a call for a catch in the 8th over when Shaw went for a lofted shot off Moeen Ali and substitute fielder Mitchell Santner went for the ball but unfortunately, dropped it. It looked like the catch should have been taken. DC was 70/0 at this point.

Another catch was dropped by Ruturaj Gaikwad off Moeen Ali’s bowling in the 10th over. This time the man who escaped was Shikhar Dhawan. DC were at 94/0 at this point. In the very 10th over, Shaw reached his 1st half-century of IPL 2021 after hitting a four at 48 runs moving on to 52 runs powered by 7 fours and 2 sixes. He achieved it in just 27 balls.

In the 11th over, Dhawan too completed his 50 in just 35 balls, including 5 fours and 2 sixes. DC were 102/0 at this point.

Finally, only in the 14th over was CSK able to stop the destructive Prithvi Shaw, as it looked like he went for a maximum off Dwayne Bravo’s ball but regrettably, handed it to Moeen Ali at deep cover. Gone for 72 from 38, including 9 fours and 3 sixes. DC were 138/1 at this point. Captain Rishabh Pant walked in to bat at no.3.

In the 17th over, Dhawan hit Shardul Thakur for 2 consecutive fours and got rewarded with a wide ball. On the 3rd ball of the over, Thakur came in with an amazing delivery that hit directly on Dhawan’s pads. Umpire lifted his finger just after the appeal. Gone for 85 runs from 54 balls, including 10 fours and 2 sixes. DC was 167/2 at this point. Marcus Stoinis came in to bat at no.4 ahead of Ajinkya Rahane who was padded up in the dug out.

The 19th over was bowled by Shardul Thakur and Stoinis welcomed him with a boundary. One ball later Shardul got the Aussie batsman caught for 14 as he attempted to finish the match with a big one. Shimron Hetmyer was sent in to bat next. Hetmyer didn’t get a chance to bat as Rishabh ended the match with a four. Marcus Stoinis scored 14 runs from 9 balls including 3 fours while Pant remained unbeaten on 15 runs from 12 balls including 2 fours.

DC won the match 7 wickets (8 balls left). This was their highest successful run chase against Chennai.
