IPL 2021- MI v RCB Match Report: RCB Grab Their First Win!
RCB won the toss and chose to bowl. Virat Kohli won the toss much to his own belief as both teams got in their own set of debutants. RCB brought in Rajat Patidar and Kyle Jamieson to make their IPL debuts while Mumbai Indians brought in uncapped Proteas all-rounder Marco Jansen in.
Rohit Sharma and Chris Lynn walked into bat as Quinton de Kock was unavailable for the first fixture.
Both teams looked good from the start with Jamieson bowling an impressive over and Rohit and Lynn defending well. Chances of a catch were formed here and there, nonetheless, both Rohit and Lynn stood still.
It was in the 4th over when Rohit hit 2 boundaries, a four and a 6, and just when it looked like he’s getting in his mood he was dismissed by a runout after a mix up between Lynn and the Mumbai captain – a brilliant throw by Kohli, collected and executed by Chahal. Rohit gone for 19 off 15. MI at 24/1 in 4 overs.
But it didn’t affect Mumbai’s momentum much as runs kept flowing from the bats of Surya and Lynn. In the 8th over Harshal Patel overstepped and Lynn was awarded with a free hit, of which he took full advantage by hitting a maximum
Lynn and Surya contributed together to a partnership of 50+ runs. In the 11th over, Sky smashed an astonishing six, then a dot ball, and the last ball of the over, a back of length off-side ball by Jamieson generated with extra bounce and edged, caught by AB de Villiers. Jamieson gets his first wicket in his IPL career in the form of Suryakumar Yadav who departed for 31 off 23. MI at 94/2 in 11 overs.
In the 13th over, Sundar bowling, when Lynn was at 49 he still looked determined to score as he went for a lofted shot and handed Sundar his own ball, a very difficult catch running backwards, but taken flawlessly. Lynn gone for 49 off 35. MI at 105/3 in 12.5 overs.
Back to back boundaries for Mumbai as Hardik and Ishan playing smartly and efficiently. Harshal Patel came in to bowl the 16th over, the last ball of the over straight to the pads of Hardik, and the umpire lifts his finger. Hardik took a review but it went in vain, impact in line, wickets hitting, Hardik out lbw. Gone for 13 off 10. MI at 135/4 in 16 overs.
18th over, Harshal delivered a fullish delivery on to Ishan Kishan’s pads – appeal but Umpire didn’t lift his finger even after the appeal, Virat goes for a review, pitching in line, impact in line, wickets hitting, Ishan gone for 28 of 19!. MI at 145/5 in 17.4 overs.
Krunal Pandya intended to hit a 6 off the first ball of 20th over bowled by Harshal Patel but it lands just firmly on Dan Christian’s hands. Krunal gone for 7 off 7. In the very next bowl Pollard hit the ball with his bat high but it didn’t look like the ball was going very far, caught by Washington Sundar, gone for 7 off 9, Harshal on a hat-trick. The next ball a good slower delivery but doesn’t achieve his hat-trick.
Harshal then followed it up with a beautiful yorker and Marco Jansen completely missed it, the ball crashes into the stumps and that was the fifer for Harshal Patel. The last ball, Chahar and Bumrah run for a 2nd but Chahar dismissed for a run out as he failed to make reach his end. Mumbai Indians closed their innings at 159-9 in 20 overs.
Just 1 run in The 20th over For Mumbai with 4 wickets in it. Harshal Patel’s first fifer in T20, 5/27, also became the first man to achieve a fifer against Mumbai Indians.
Chasing 160 runs to win – Virat Kohli and Washington Sundar walked in to open for RCB in the absence of Devdutt Padikkal. Decent runs were flowing for RCB from a few shots here and there and running between the wickets. Sundar looked a bit uncomfortable since the start and played a shot bound to be caught in the 5th over. Giving away his wicket scoring just 10 runs off 16 balls. RCB was 36/1 at this point.
Last ball of the 6th over, Trent boult bowled a beautiful knuckle ball and Rajat Patidar edged the ball on to the stumps. Out for 8 off 8, RCB at 46/2.
50 run partnership between Maxwell and Kohli by 13 overs. As Maxwell went for maximums Kohli made sure they got the runs between the wickets. Maxwell even hit a huge 100 meter six which went out of the stadium.
In the 13th over when Maxwell and Virat just scored a 50 run partnership together, Bumrah came in and bowled a good length ball which Kohli missed and it hit straight to the pads, umpire lifted his finger and Kohli walked out without reviewing, gone for 33 off 29. RCB at 98/3
The first ball of the 15th over, a short ball by Jansen and Maxwell aimed to pull, but didn’t time it well – caught at short fine leg by Chris Lynn, well set Maxwell is now out for 39 off 28. RCB at 103/4.
Last ball of the 15th over, Jansen bowled a short ball and Shahbaz went for a pull shot, handing it to Krunal Pandya, dismissed in a similar way as Maxwell. Shahbaz Ahmed gone for 1 off 2. Pressure building up on RCB, all eyes on ABD now, RCB at 106/5.
17th over: Dan Christian on strike as Bumrah bowled a short ball and Dan cut it away. Unfortunately, it landed straight into Rahul Chahar’s hands. Dan gone for 1 off 3, RCB at 122/6 in 16.3 overs.
Last ball of the 19th over,low full toss ball by Bumrah, Jamieson hit it straight back towards Bumrah as ABD called for a run but a direct hit by Bumrah ended Jamieson’s innings. Gone for 4 off 4, RCB now at 152/7.
Last over of the match, Marco Jansen bowled the first ball, ABD on strike, he took a single trusting his batting partner Harshal on strike. Jansen bowled to Harshal and he put it away in the air while Surya Kumar Yadav chased the ball as it landed in no man’s ground. Jansen bowled the 3rd ball as Harshal took a single, as ABD got back on strike again. Jansen with the length ball, ABD and Harshal get 1 run and aimed towards another – running towards their respective ends as Krunal sent in a good throw at the keeper’s end. AB de Villiers’ diving effort in vain as he fell short of his crease as Ishan Kishan collected it cleanly and did the neeful. ABD starts to walk back and replays confirm it’s out. ABD gone for 48 off 27 with the help of 4 fours & 2 sixes. RCB now at 158/8 in 19.4 overs – 2 runs required in 2 balls to win
Jansen bowled on the pads to Siraj as he flicked it away taking a single and brought Harshal on strike. 1 needed off 1, Jansen with the last ball of the match to Harshal as he too flicks it away and runs while Bumrah tried to stop the bowl by diving but Harshal and Siraj complete the run and led RCB to victory.
