New RCB Captain announced

Proteas cricketer and former CSK player Faf du Plessis has been appointed as the new RCB captain. du Plessis takes charge from Virat Kohli who has relinquished his captaincy at the end of IPL 2021.

“I can’t be happier for the team and Faf. He is a good friend and we get along very well. Looking forward to a good season,” said Kohli, the outgoing captain.

Faf du Plessis will become the seventh cricketer to lead Royal Challengers Bangalore and the fourth overseas player to take charge. The captains prior to du Plessis leading RCB were Rahul Dravid, Kevin Pietersen, Anil Kumble, Daniel Vettori, Virat Kohli and Shane Watson.

The outgoing captain Virat Kohli has led RCB in 140 matches – 64 wins & 69 losses – a win percentage of 48.16.

Faf du Plessis has never led any team in IPL history so far. That comes as a surprise as du Plessis is known for his strong leadership skills. He led South Africa and World XI in International Cricket. In T20 leagues, he captained Comilla Victorians (Bangladesh), Paarl Rocks (South Africa), St Kitts and Nevis Patriots and St Lucia Kings (West Indies).

Du Plessis made his IPL debut with Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2012. He was first picked in the auction by CSK in 2011. During the two-year suspension of CSK, Faf du Plessis featured in Rising Pune Supergiants in 2016 and 2017.

Faf has played a total of 100 matches in IPL. He scored 2935 runs in 93 innings at an average of 34.94 powered by a strike rate of 131.08 with 22 half-centuries to his name. In his final year with CSK, he recorded 633 runs which was crucial in CSK lifting the trophy.
